I’ve made my share of Gingerbread Houses over the years but this Harry Potter Gingerbread House is really special to me.

Updated post from 2015.

Harry Potter was my very first movie inspired gingerbread house. And I have to say I really poured my heart into it. I remember it took me hours to design it. And honesty, even after all these years there is not a thing I would change on this house. Though I have to say I really regret not taking a photo of the back panel. I loved the back panel with the Hogwarts Emblem.

Are you ready? Let’s do this.

HOW TO MAKE A HARRY POTTER INSPIRED GINGERBREAD HOUSE

I baked all the house panels and cookie decorations using my Gingerbread Dough for Constructions and Houses. You can find templates and list of tools I used at the bottom of the post. And to decorate I used Royal Icing.

HARRY POTTER GLASSES AND LIGHTNING BOLT

Let’s start with Harry Potter. A young wizard who wears round glasses, has a lightning bold scar on his forehead and wears a striped scarf. I combined all these appearance characteristics in my side house panel design.

ROYAL ICING COLORS AND CONSISTENCIES :

  • Red, Yellow – 15 second consistency
  • Black,Yellow – 20 second consistency

DECORATING STEPS:

Start by dividing the cookie into sections. Use an edible marker and a ruler or straight edge paper. With black royal icing (20sec) first ice the frames and let them crust. Then pipe the bridge and both end pieces. Let crust. Lastly with black icing outline the glasses.

Flood every other section with yellow icing (15sec), let crust. Continue flooding remaining sections with red icing (15sec). Let crust well. Pipe lightning bolt outline with black icing (20sec) and fill it with yellow.(20sec). Use a needle tool to accentuate the points while icing is wet. Let dry.

HARRY POTTER FRONT OF THE GINGERBREAD HOUSE

Front panel includes Harry Potter Logo, Broom, Magic Books and doors represent Platform 9 3/4.

ROYAL ICING COLORS AND CONSISTENCIES :

  • Red – 10  to 15 second consistency
  • Yellow, Black – 20 second consistency

DECORATING STEPS :

With edible marker and template trace the window outlines on the cookie. Pipe the window frames with black icing (20sec). Let crust. Then with red icing (10 to 15sec) flood the whole front panel and let dry.

With a template and pin or a needle trace the Harry Potter logo onto the dry icing. Outline and flood with yellow royal icing (20sec). Let dry.

Pipe the lattice pattern into each window and make the window frame with black royal icing (20sec).

Using food only paint brush paint dry Harry Potter logo with Aztec Gold Luster Dust mixed with a little bit of lemon extract.

PLATFORM 9 ¾

I cut out door shape from gingerbread cookie dough using a template and an exacto knife. If you have a pen blade use it instead.

ROYAL ICING COLORS AND CONSISTENCIES :

  • Brown – piping consistency
  • Red, Black – 20 second consistency
  • White -25 second consistency

DECORATING STEPS :

Pipe the brick pattern with brown icing. Let crust. Then fill each little brick section with red icing (20sec). Use a needle tool to shape the icing while still wet. Let dry. Brush some thick gray icing onto the brick for texture.

Pipe a black rectangular sign with black icing (20sec) and let crust. Onto the black pipe number 9 ¾ with white icing (25sec). Let it dry and then finish black sign by painting decorative border with Aztec Gold Luster Dust mixed with lemon extract.

HARRY POTTER BROOM

ROYAL ICING COLORS AND CONSISTENCIES :

  • Brown, Yellow : 20 second consistency

DECORATING STEPS :

Pipe a handle with brown royal icing (20sec), let it crust. Next pipe the bottom with yellow (20sec) and let crust. After pipe details on the bottom of the broom  with brown and yellow icing, let dry. Finish the broom handle with brown edible marker, draw wood grain texture pattern.

HARRY POTTER MAGIC BOOKS

ROYAL ICING COLORS AND CONSISTENCIES :

  • Blue, Green, Brown, White – 20 second consistency

DECORATING STEPS :

To make the books pipe small rectangles next to each other. Be sure to pipe every other rectangle and let it crust before piping a section next to it. Let dry. Write Magic Book Titles onto the rectangles with fine tip edible marker (Rainbow Dust Brand)

This next step is optional. I decided to add dimension to the stacked book designs. Pipe the sides of the books. Let dry. Then paint lines, dots zic zac lines on the books with Aztec Gold Luster Dust mixed with lemon extract.

HOGWARTS HOUSES : GRYFFINDOR, RAVENCLAW, SLYTHERIN, HUFFLEPUFF

Back panel on my magical Harry Potter Gingerbread House represents 4 Hogwarts Houses.

ROYAL ICING COLORS AND CONSISTENCIES :

  • Blue, Yellow, Green Red – 10 to 15 second consistency – to flood the base and Harry Potter Emblem
  • Black – 25 second consistency – make royal icing transfers animals

DECORATING STEPS :

Find a center of the cookie panel. Divide panel into 4 sections.

Flood each section with a different color royal icing : green, blue, red and yellow (10 to 15 second). Let dry.

HARRY POTTER EMBLEM – LION, EAGLE, SNAKE, BADGER ROYAL ICING TRANSFERS

ROYAL ICING COLORS AND CONSISTENCIES :

  • Black -25 second consistency

DECORATING STEPS :

  • Gryffindor – Lion
  • Ravenclaw – Eagle
  • Slytherin – Snake
  • Hufflepuff – Badger

Prepare animal silhouettes as royal icing transfer. Place a piece of wax paper over a template. Secure corner with a tape. Then start piping animals with black royal icing (25sec). It is important to let parts of the animals crust before moving onto the neighboring sections. This ensures icing won’t just blend together and you’ll have nice dimensional animal silhouette designs. Let icing dry overnight.

After icing dries you can then peel off the wax paper from royal icing transfers. Transfers can be prepared ahead of time. Weeks, even months. Store them in an airtight container.

Trace the Harry Potter Emblem outline onto the dry icing. Then flood each panel with the corresponding base layer color. While icing is still wet carefully place animal royal icing transfer onto the icing. Very gently press the transfer into the icing. If needed move the icing underneath with a needle tool to ensure a proper adhesion of royal icing transfer. Let dry.

HOW TO CREATE PATINA ON ROYAL ICING

Make brown paint :  mix together brown gel food coloring with little bit alcohol (Everclear, lemon juice)

Dip a clean never used make up sponge into a paint and then sponge the dry icing. Repeat until you are happy with the result. Then add some Aztec Gold Luster Dust mixed with lemon extract onto the icing and again use a sponge to blend it in. Let dry.

GOLDEN SNITCH

How to make Golden Snitch? Shape gingerbread into a ball. Insert 2 toothpicks into the gingerbread and bake the ball with the toothpicks inserted. Bake the ball for 8-11 minutes at 350F. Let it cool slightly, remove toothpicks. There should be 2 holes in the gingerbread ball.

ROYAL ICING COLORS AND CONSISTENCIES :

  • White – 20 second consistency, 30 second consistency

DECORATING STEPS :

Pipe the wings with white icing (20sec). While wet press a piece of toothpick into the icing, on the wider side. Let dry overnight.

Make the feather effect with white icing (30sec). Layer icing on top of each other creating feather like designs. Let dry. Then paint each wing with Silver Edible Paint. Let dry.

Pipe little bit of royal icing into each gingerbread ball. Insert the wings and let dry for couple of hours.

Prepare gold luster dust paint : mix little bit of lemon extract and Aztec Gold Luster dust in small dish. After using food only paint brush paint the gingerbread ball. Let dry.

DARK MARK / GLITTERING GREEN SKULL – SYMBOL OF VOLDERMORT AND HIS DEATH EATERS

I found this skull ice cube mold at a dollar store. Spray the mold with a nonstick spray. Shape a small piece of gingerbread into a ball and press it into the mold. Freeze for 10 minutes. Then turn the mold upside down and bang it on a work surface to unmold the skulls. Bake in the preheated oven at 350 F for 8-11 minutes. Let cool before decorating.

ROYAL ICING COLORS AND CONSISTENCY :

Green – 10 second consistency (mix leaf green and yellow or use electric green gel color)

DECORATING STEPS :

Pour green icing (10sec) over a cooled skull cookie. Let it drip and then carefully slide it to a clean section of parchment. Dust with Diamond Dust/Edible Glitter. Let dry.

OWL HEDWIG

Use a small round cutter to make the owl cookie. First cut out a round then trim the top of the owl with the same round cutter.

ROYAL ICING COLORS AND CONSISTENCIES :

  • White, Gray, Yellow, Black – 15 second consistency

DECORATING STEPS :

Ice the cookie with white icing (15sec). Next into the wet white base pipe the eyes : pipe yellow dots, then pipe black into the yellow. Finish with adding a small white dot for the reflection. Use a needle tool to apply a tiny white dot of royal icing.

Then pipe 3 scalloped lines across the belly and make the wings with light gray royal icing. Let crust and then pipe the eyebrows line. Let dry.

HOPPING CAULDRON

Over the years it sort of became a habit of mine (it’s hard to break this habit now) to design gingerbread chimneys after movie characters. Chimney as cauldron is a such a great idea, is it not?

ROYAL ICING COLORS AND CONSISTENCIES :

  • Black – 15 and 25 second consistency

DECORATING STEPS :

Flood each chimney piece with a black icing (15sec)and let dry. Then pipe the lines across, make the bottom of the handle (20sec) and let it crust. Finish the handle by piping short lines across the top. Let dry.

With Aztec Gold Luster Dust mixed with a little bit of lemon extract paint the black icing.

HARRY POTTER GINGERBREAD HOUSE ASSEMBLY

If you made it this far. I bow to you. It’s time to put it all together.

ROYAL ICING COLORS AND CONSISTENCIES :

  • Brown – stiff consistency – don’t use runny icing or icing that is overly stiff

DECORATING STEPS :

Pipe 2 lines on the vertical edges of the front panel. Then glue the side panels on the front panel. Support the panels with small decorating bottles. Then glue the back panel onto the side panels. Let the base dry for 5-6 hours.

Now it’s time glue the roof panels on the base. Hold the roof panels in place for 30 seconds. Be sure to support the roof from each side. Use small bottle or skewers so panels don’t slide while icing is drying. Let dry overnight. Turn the house on the side and glue the Golden Snitch on the front panel. Let dry for several hours.

NAGIRI – LARGE GREEN SNAKE

Roof represent Nagiri, a large green snake from Harry Potter.

ROYAL ICING COLORS AND CONSISTENCY :

  • Green – stiff consistency

DECORATING STEPS :

With a stiff icing decorate both roof panels. First spread a thin layer of green icing onto each panel. Let it dry for an hour. Then with a large round piping tip pipe the scales with stiff royal icing. Starting at the bottom of the roof an working your way up.

Assemble the black chimney (cauldron) and glue it onto the roof. Finish the top of the roof with green royal icing. Let dry overnight.

POLYJUICE POTION

To enhance the scales dust them with brown petal dust and use a dry food only paint brush to shade them.

To make Polyjuice Potion I used small green M&M’s candies. Fill the chimney with green candies. Use royal icing to glue few candies on the edge and sides of the chimney as if it was overflowing.

Attach Owl Hedwig and Glittering Green Skull into the windows. I made 2 owls. One sits in the window and one on the roof. Skull sits in the window.

MY COOKIE DOESN’T FIT IN THE WINDOW?

If needed use a zester to shave off some the cookie to make it fit in the window.

We did it! Here is my easy Harry Potter Gingerbread House.

HOW LONG DOES A GINGERBREAD HOUSE LAST?

At least a year. Avoid storing at extreme temperatures.

CAN I EAT IT ?

Though edible this house is made with my construction cookie dough which bakes very hard.

USE THESE COOKIE DOUGHS FOR HOUSES TO BE EATEN :

CAN I USE FONDANT TO DECORATE?

Sure. I like to make my own Marshmallow Fondant.
