I made Hocus Pocus Gingerbread House for Halloween! Hocus Pocus movie, since its release in 1993 has become a cult classic. Inspired by a spooky story of 3 Sanderson Sisters : Winnie, Sarah and Mary, book of spells, magical black cat, black flame candle and life potion I designed my Hocus Pocus Gingerbread House.

HOCUS POCUS GINGERBREAD HOUSE

I put a spell on you and now you are mine! And  Tonight we fly. So let’s go.

  • TABLE OF CONTENTS
  • Book of Spells
  • Black Flame Candle, Life Potion
  • Hocus Pocus Moon
  • Billy Butcherson
  • The Sanderson Sisters
  • Hocus Pocus Broom, Mop, Vacuum
  • Immortal Black Cat -Thackery Binx
  • Hocus Pocus House Assembly

FRONT PANEL

Front panel background on my Hocus Pocus Gingerbrad House is inspired by a Hocus Pocus Poster.

COLORS AND CONSISTENCY :

  • Dark Blue – I mixed royal blue with a minuscule amount of black – 15 second consistency
  • Light Blue – use dark blue and add white royal icing to it to make it lighter – 15 second consistency
  • Pink – pink mixed with a minuscule amount of fuchsia -15 second consistency

DECORATING STEPS :

Divide cookie into 3 sections. Flood bottom with pink, middle with light blue and top with dark blue. Immediately using a small palette knife and a needle tool marble icing together. Let dry.

HOCUS POCUS SPELLBOOK

Front door design is based on evil magic book of spells from the Hocus Pocus Movie.

COLORS AND CONSISTENCY :

  • Brown – 15 to 20 second consistency
  • Gray – 20 second consistency, piping consistency
  • White, Electric Green, Black – 20 to 25 second – to make an eye
  • Ivory – piping consistency – to make stitches

DECORATING STEPS :

Trace the door outline with edible marker onto the dry icing. Draw spellbook outlines on the icing.

Start with making an eye. Pipe a large white oval shape drop. While wet pipe a large green dot/iris in the center on the white dot. Next, pipe a black dot/pupil in the center of green. To make a tiny white dot for the reflection use a needle to apply white royal icing on the edge of a black pupil.

Using brown royal icing ice the door/spellbook in sections. Let each section crust before icing neighboring sections. Let dry.

SHADING WITH PETAL DUST

With a brown petal dust and a dry food only paint brush shade the seams and edges on the spellbook.

With gray royal icing 20 second consistency pipe corner, long rectangular sections and oval shaped section around the eye. Let crust.

With edible marker make dots along the seams. Next, with ivory royal icing pipe short lines/stitches across the seams. Use the dots made with edible marker as a guide.

BLACK FLAME CANDLE | LIFE POTION

COLORS AND CONSISTENCY :

  • White – 15 second consistency, 20 second consistency
  • Black – 15 to 20 second consistency
  • Electric Green – 20 second consistency

DECORATING STEPS :

First finish the snake design on the spellbook. Pipe the body 1st with gray 20 second consistency. Let it crust. Then gray royal icing to make the head of the snake and let crust again. With gray icing make the snake’s eyes. Let crust.

With white icing make the black flame candle and with black icing make the cauldron. Let crust.

HOCUS POCUS MOON

COLORS AND CONSISTENCY :

  • Orange – 15 second consistency

DECORATING STEPS :

Finish the candle and cauldron designs. With white icing 20 second consistency make the drips on a black flame candle. Next, make the black flame with black royal icing 20 second consistency. Fill the cauldron with electric green 20 second consistency icing.

Make the moon. Trace the circle outline onto the icing with edible marker. Outline and flood with orange royal icing. Let dry.

With silver edible paint paint dry gray royal icing. Use black edible marker to draw on gray icing around the eyes.

With electric green 20 second icing make the bubbles on the cauldron.

Write Hocus Pocus onto the orange moon with edible marker.

BILLY BUTCHERSON

Window design is based on Billy Butcherson character from the movie.

COLORS AND CONSISTENCY :

  • Electric Green -15 second consistency, 20 second consistency
  • Light Blue – 15 second consistency
  • Black – piping consistency

DECORATING STEPS :

Ice the windows with electric green and let crust. Ice the remaining cookie with light blue and let crust.

With electric green 20 second consistency pipe the window frames and let dry.

Next, with dry food only paint brush shade the window frame with a brown petal dust.

Then with edible marker make dots on the frame. With black piping consistency pipe straight lines/window rods across the window. Use dots for the reference where to start piping.

THE SANDERSON SISTERS

Hocus Pocus Gingerbread House had to have 3 Sanderson Sister! I used silhouettes of Winnie, Sarah, Mary to decorate one roof panel.

COLORS AND CONSISTENCY :

  • Dark Blue – 10 to 15 second consistency
  • Yellow, Orange(dark and light) Green, Red, Purple – 20 second consistency – to make silhouettes

DECORATING STEPS :

Ice the roof panel with dark blue icing and let dry. Draw spiderwebs on the icing with fine tip edible marker. Trace the silhouettes’ outlines of Sanderson Sisters with edible marker on the icing. Airbrush the edges with black airbrush food coloring.

Ice silhouettes with purple, red, light orange, dark orange, green, and yellow.

Dip the tip of the food brush into white food coloring and silver edible paint and splatter the cookie.

COME WE FLY! HOCUS POCUS BROOM, MOP, VACUUM

COLORS AND CONSISTENCY :

  • Dark Blue – 10-15 second consistency
  • Light Brown, Gray, Orange, Black – 20 second consistency

DECORATING STEPS :

Ice the cookie with dark blue icing, use a needle tool to distribute the icing and let dry. Airbrush the edges with black airbrush food coloring. Splatted the cookie with white food color.

With a needle tool mark the lines for the broom, mop and vacuum.

IMMORTAL BLACK CAT – THACKERY BINX

COLORS AND CONSISTENCY :

  • Black -15 second consistency

DECORATING STEPS :

Trace the cat outline on iced cookie with an edible marker. Then with black royal icing outline and flood the cat. Let dry.

HOCUS POCUS GINGERBREAD HOUSE ASSEMBLY

It is important that use use stiff royal icing to glue the panels together. However using icing that is very stiff will result in a week bond between panels.

COLOR AND CONSISTENCY :

  • Brown – stiff royal icing

DECORATING STEPS :

First glue the bottom 4 house panels together. Starting with the back panel, then add side panels and lastly glue on front panel. Let icing dry for at least 4-5 hours.

Next, glue on the roof panels. Support bottom of the roof panels in place with small  sprinkles’ bottles or cut up bamboo sticks ( see Star Wars Gingerbread House for details). Let icing dry overnight.

Pipe a decorative border where 2 roof panels meet. And while icing is wet dust it with black nonpareils. Let dry.

With white food coloring draw lightning on the dry icing.
