CRUSTING BUTTERCREAM

For this tutorial, I used my crusting buttercream for cookie decorating. Buttercream can be easily colored with concentrated gel fool colors.

PREPARE PIPING BAGS FOR DECORATING

What is a decorating coupler? The coupler is a two-piece device that allows you to change piping tips quickly, without having to change the piping bags.

Drop the part with the thread on the outside, into a piping bag. With scissors mark the spot where to cut it, about an inch from the thread (steps 1-4).

Cut the tip of the piping bag. Secure a piping tip onto the base with a ring, part with the thread on the inside (steps 6-8).

HOW TO FILL A PIPING BAG WITH FROSTING

To fill a piping bag, rest it in a small glass. Fold the top of the piping bag over the rim for easier filling. Spoon icing into the bag. Lift the bag. Twist the end of the bag and tie it with a rubber band (steps 1-8).

HOW TO HOLD A PIPING BAG

Hold the piping bag toward the top (at the twist) with your dominant hand and not at the bottom (step 1). When piping lines, support/guide the bag with the index finger of your other hand. If your hand is shaking, use the other hand to support the wrist of your dominant hand, one that is holding a piping bag (steps 2-4).

JACK-O-LANTERN COOKIES

Take a spoonful of orange buttercream and spread it onto a cookie. Use the back of the spoon to smooth it onto a cookie (steps 1-4).

With the back of the spoon, create pumpkin segments. Start from the top, move the spoon vertically on a slight curve. Put little pressure onto the spoon and shape buttercream, creating the segments. Make two first segments in the middle part of the cookie and then work towards the outer edges (steps 5-8).

Take a toothpick and draw triangle outlines for the eyes and the nose. And also for the mouth (steps 1-2).

Outline each triangle and fill it with black buttercream. To fill sections move the piping bag back and forth, creating a zic zac pattern (steps 3-8).

HALLOWEEN GHOST COOKIES

Spread purple buttercream on a cookie, use the back of the spoon to smooth it onto a cookie (steps 1-5). Then immediately decorate with yellow sprinkles (step 6).

MUMMY COOKIES

Pipe black buttercream in the upper part of the cookie (steps 1-2).

With white buttercream, pipe two large dots onto the black section (steps 3-5). Then pipe small black dots in the middle of each white dot (steps 6-8).

Before moving on to the next step, switch out piping tips on a piping bag with white buttercream (step 1). Unscrew the coupler ring, take the round piping tip out, and replace it with a petal tip #104 (steps 2-6).
