My 1st Carved Cake – Tooth Cake

It’s been a while since I made this cake and today I decided to share it with you. I’m very proud of this cake, it was my very first attempt in a carved cake and though I’m positive there are things that could have been done better  for me this cake meant so much more than  just a cake, it was a surprise gift for my dentist Dr. Greg.  His Birthday falls on the same day as mine and as I was turning 30 I wanted to make something special for him as well. I have a tendency to give on my Birthdays.I know it sounds weird but that’s how it is.
I decided to I made the cake as a surprise for him, only his wife knew.

I told myself : ” Girl you are going to make him a tooth cake, one that actually looks like a tooth.” I had no idea where to start, I was looking at tooth pictures for hours( I mean I knew all the shapes there are , I’ve seen them all), then finally I found an image of a tooth from the top, so I used that to carve my initial shape. I used a dense chocolate mud cake, totally delicious, nothing gets wasted using this recipe. It is so yummy and moist. I love it.It was filled with ganache.

All the dental utensils were made from a gum paste, growing up my father worked as a dental tools engineer and later as a manager of a  manufacturing unit,  I spent one Summer working there, making dental pieces. I got a close look at them – those little tools we all had an encounter with at some point in our lives.

One of my favorite features of the cake is a Tooth Angel, made from gum paste.

I really enjoyed making this cake and I hope I’ll get a chance to make a tooth cake again, though challenging,   Dr. Greg’s face was priceless when he saw the  sweet tooth surprise. His reaction was.:”No tooth is that perfect, we need to get some cavity in there.” LOL. After 2 years, Dr. Greg still keeps a picture of a his tooth cake in his office.
