Baking/Cooking Conversions


I’m writing this post for all of you who are struggling with  measuring cup system versus metric system and visa versa.Ever since I started writing this blog I’ve posted numerous recipes, some of them use cups, some grams. Confusing? Probably.
From time to time I’ll get an email asking for conversion from cup to grams or from grams to metric.Unfortunately I’m not able to answer all your emails and convert all the recipes on the fly.

As you know in America we use volume using measuring cups  and where I grew up- in Slovakia we use weight using a scale, so naturally some of the recipes you find on my blog are in grams.

My personal preference  is  grams/ kilo, and the reason is that I just find this to be so much more precise. 
When using  a cup to measure flour,  should the flour be sifted prior measuring or not? This fact as well as the quality of flour changes how much flour will fit into the cup, and so on.

1pound = 454grams
100 grams=3.52 ounces

  1. I prefer the weighing method because it is more precise as you explained. But because I often use american recipes with cups I gave up converting and simply bought myself a set op cup and spoon measures.
    Problem solved and no need for all the math and chartes ;).

  4. You've explained it very well, thanks! As a European I prefer grams. But I must confess that I have a cute measuring cups and spoons and use them a lot … And a curiosity, one of the most popular recipes in Spain is the yogurt cake and the ingredients aren`t weighed, are measured using the yogurt container, i.e. volume.
