Plum Poppy Seed Galette

Few days ago I visited Galettes’ Heaven and I couldn’t look back anymore. I wanted to make this dessert for so many years yet I never got around to actually do it.
At www.tastespottingcom site there are hundreds of galettes; no I didn’t count them but it seems like there is a lot of them, they are picturesque and now I know they are delicious as well and so easy to make.

I used fresh prune plums and poppy seed topping to make the galette last night.
You should know that in Slovak Cuisine poppy seeds are used in large amounts, we make poppy seed rolls, poppy seeds are used as topping for homemade noodles, pasta, cakes, steamed dumplings, flour dumplings, potato pancakes(lokse) etc. When I first looked for poppy seeds in the grocery store here in the States; I found them in the spice isle..in a mini jar.It was so small I was thinking to myself :” This can’t be right!”
Now  I buy them either at a Polish store or Russian store, usually in a pound bag. It is so much cheaper and really much more reasonable for me to buy as we use them a lot.

Naturally with plums I thought of  poppy seeds;  my grandmother used to make plum bread with poppy seed topping, or plum jam bread with poppy seed topping. Both are delicious.

Plum Poppy Seed Galette-about 6- 5inch galletes
crust
1 1/3 cups all purpose flour
3tbl whole wheat pastry flour
2tbl brown sugar
1/4tsp salt
1/8tsp ginger
8tbl chilled butter, cut into small cubes(114grams)
1/4cup iced water

filling
1pound plums, halved, removed stone
juice of one lemon
zest of one lemon
1/4cup brown sugar – divided in half(I had really sweet plums, but if your plums are more sour add more sugar)
2tbl rum

3tbl oats
2tbl melted butter

Poppy Seed Filling
1/2cup poppy seeds
1/2 cup powdered sugar

Using a Coffee Grinder, grind the poppy seeds, pulsing for 20-30 seconds, remove from the coffee grinder and combine with powdered sugar.Set aside.

Make Crust

In a medium bowl combine flour, add ginger, salt and stir until combined, add chilled pieces of butter and either use pastry blender or your fingers, work the butter until it resembles coarse meal, add ice water and stir just until dough is moist and comes somewhat together. Don’t knead it. It is okay to see small pieces of butter in the dough. Wrap the dough into the plastic wrap and chill for 20 minutes.

Prepare baking sheet, line the sheet with parchment paper.

Prepare Plum Filling
In a sauce pan combine plums, half of the brown sugar, lemon juice, lemon zest, rum. Bring to boil and cook 10 minutes until plums are tender, remove from heat and cool to room temperature

Making Mini Galettes
Preheat oven to 425F
Dust your work surface with a bit of flour, just tiny bit, roll the pastry dough into about 1/4 inch thick, it can be little thinner. Cut out 5 inch rounds, use a cookie cutter or use a plate as a template. You will have approximately 6 rounds.
Spread about 1/2tbl oats in the middle of each round and place about 2 to 3 plum halves into the center of the round, leaving about 1inch edge around without plums. Fold the edges of dough over plum mixture. Sprinkle with left over brown sugar and spoon the poppy seed topping on the top.Brush pastries with butter.

Baking
425F- bake for 10 minutes
reduce oven temperature to 370F(leave galettes in the oven) and bake additional 15-20 minutes, and bake until edges are golden. Remove from the oven and cool on the baking sheet.Enjoy.
