HOW TO MAKE 3D CHRISTMAS STOCKING COOKIES
To make 3D cookies I used my Basic Sugar Cookie Recipe. But you can use pretty much any rolled out cookie recipe you’d like. And to decorate I used Royal Icing.

3D COOKIE DESIGN
To make a 3D cookie with a cavity in the middle you’ll need a total of 3 cookies : front, middle (with the cavity) and a back cookie.
LARGE CHRISTMAS STOCKING COOKIE CUTTER
I couldn’t find a large Christmas stocking cutter and so I used a stocking paper template instead . When cutting out cookie shapes by hand it’s best to chill rolled out cookie dough for 10 minutes. You’ll find it is musch easier to hand cut chilled cookie dough. And to cut cookie shapes by hand dough use an exacto knife or a pen blade.
When using a sharp blade always remember to protect surface underneath of the rolled out cookie dough. Place a plastic sheet/thin cutting board underneath your parchment on which the cookie dough is rolled out.
HOW TO ROLL OUT COOKIE DOUGH WITH EVEN THICKNESS?
To roll out cookie dough with even thickness use rolling guides.
For this project I used 2 rolling guides : 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch.
To make front and back cookie layer roll out cookie dough to 1/4 inch thick. Use a large stocking template and an exacto knife/pen blade and cut out both cookies.
To make the middle cookie layer roll out cookie dough to ½ inch thick. Use a small square or rectangle cutter to cut out middle of the cookies (see the picture below) . Or use an exacto knife if you can’t find a small cutter.
Bake cookies at 375F for 9-11 minutes. Let cool for 10 minutes on a baking sheet before transferring cookies onto a cooling rack. Handle cookie with a cavity with an extra care so it doesn’t break.
DECORATE CHRISTMAS STOCKING COOKIES
ROYAL ICING COLORS AND CONSISTENCIES :
- Red, White, Green – 15 second consistency
- Red, Green – piping consistency
DECORATING STEPS :
First, outline and flood the cookie with red icing (15sec). Immediately pipe small white polka dots with white royal icing (15sec). Allow icing to crust well.
Create elf collar triangle shape with green royal icing (15sec). Shape the triangle points with a needle tool. Clean up the edge with food only paint brush. And allow icing to crust.
Then with green icing (15sec) decorate the stocking’s cuff section. Allow each section to crust before adding neighboring section.
HOW TO MAKE JINGLE BELLS WITH ROYAL ICING
ROYAL ICING COLORS AND CONSISTENCIES :
- Yellow – 20 to 25 second consistency
- Red, Green – piping consistency
DECORATING STEPS :
Pipe small yellow dots on the elf triangle collar. Smooth the top with a needle tool as needed. Allow yellow dots to dry.
Using green and red icing (piping consistency) outline the design.
Once yellow dots are dry use a black edible marker and draw small dots and slightly curved lines on the yellow dots.
CHRISTMAS STOCKING COOKIES MARBLED DESIGN
ROYAL ICING COLORS AND CONSISTENCIES :
- Red, White, Green – 15 second consistency
- Red, White – piping consistency
DECORATING STEPS :
Start by outlining and flooding the cookie with red royal icing (15sec). Then immediately pipe straight lines across the top alternating white and green icing (15sec). Don’t allow icing to crust.
Right after create marbled designs with a needle tool or a toothpick. Run a tip of the tool through piped green and white lines (as shown in the picture). Run the tool through lines alternating directions.
For example : first run the tool thru the icing from top to bottom and then from bottom to top. This way you’ll create a chevron pattern (seamless zig zag pattern). It is best to wipe the tip of the tool every time you run it through the icing. Allow icing to crust.
Outline and flood the top cuff section with white icing (15sec). Allow icing to dry.
To make personalized Christmas Stocking Cookies use a black edible marker and write names across dry white section. Allow color from the food pen to dry for couple of minutes. Then outline the white section with white icing (piping consistency) and dust the outline with white sanding sugar.
HOW TO DECORATE CANDY CANE COOKIES
ROYAL ICING COLORS AND CONSISTENCIES :
- Red, White – 15 second consistency
DECORATING STEPS :
Start by outlining candy cane cookie with red icing (15sec). Divide cookie into sections and then flood every other section with red icing. Then flood the remaining sections with white icing (15sec). Use a needle tool to shape the icing while it is wet. Lastly pipe red lines across the wet white sections. Allow icing to dry.
HOW TO ASSEMBLE 3D CHRISTMAS STOCKING COOKIES
Use thick white royal icing to glue the cookies together. Glue middle cookie (with cavity) onto the bottom cookie layer. Then glue top (decorated cookie) onto the middle section. Allow icing to dry for couple of hours. Glued cookie piece should stand on its own.
Stuff assembled 3D cookies with small candies or use a decorated candy cane cookie. And if desired you can package them using clear poly bags.
These Christmas Cookies make for great gifts and they will look adorable as table setting cookies, too.
