Wine Bottle in a Crate Cake Video Tutorial, Gumpaste Wine Bottle Tutorial
I’ve always wanted to try my hand in making this type of a cake though for a very long time I was intimidated by it. It looked so complicated!
But once faced with the challenge I rolled up my sleeves, made some gumpaste, baked a cake and I got working. It was a fun cake to make and I’m making it again but with the white wine bottle, which is going to be green.
For those of you who would like to make a cake like this I also made Step by Step video tutorial and you can find it below.

Gumpaste, store bought-I use Wilton Brand or homemade.(I also make my own, it is a lot cheaper than store bought especially if you need a lot of gumpaste)

Size of the cake(lenght and width) depends on the length and width of the bottle.
For Example :
Finished Gumpaste Bottle is 10 inches long x 3 inches wide
Iced Cake should be minimum about :
11 to 12 inches long and 4 to 5 inches wide
Long Crate Panels (about 0.2 inch thick) :
11 to 12 inches long
Short Panels (about 0.2 inch thick) :
4 to 5 inches + 0.2+0.2 inch = 4.4 to 5.4 inches – approx. 4.5 to 5.5 inches
(0.4 inch accounts for the overlap you need on both sides)
Make sure the panels are same height, about 1 to 1 1/2 inches taller than the iced cake.
Cake Recipe
Velvet Vanilla Pound Cake
Swiss Buttercream
Simple Sugar Syrup – 1/2 :1 (granulated sugar : water), flavored with almond and vanilla extracts
Roasted Coconut – Wood Shaving- Filler
Sweetened Coconut Flakes
- Preheat oven to 325F. Spread coconut on a baking sheet. Roast until lightly tinted, don’t let it brown. Check on the coconut frequently, toss it using a spoon or a fork for even roasting.
- Remove from the oven and let cool completely before adding coconut wood shaving on the top of the cake.

Thank you for this tutorial! How much gumpaste would you say is needed to make this?
For the bottle and the wooden crate – you don’t want it to be too thin and also it depends on the size you are making. I used a standard size bottle 750ml bottle. I’d estimate about 2 pounds, roughly.
You're tutorial is perfection — it made an apparently daunting task actually quite simple! Thanks for the guidance! My pics and a shout-out to you are on my blog http://cupofsugarpinchoflove.blogspot.com/2015/12/toasting-with-cake.html Thanks again!
