Haniela's: First Holy Communion

First Holy Communion

Monday, May 3, 2010

These were made for my friend's daughter Katie. She is such a girlie girl, so I tried to include her gentle, sweet nature in the cake, cookies, and cupcakes.

Gumpaste  Figure
I don't make gumpaste figures that often, so I made gum paste from scratch and I think she turned to be quite lovely. What do you think? I added few details to the dress, like drop shape edging around the neck and pretty tiny flowers at the bottom of her dress.
To enhance the  dress I painted  details  with  pearl luster dust. You can learn about luster dust in my special post dedicated to this product. I love it. I use it every time I get a chance.;-)
Most times I buy it at discounted price at Michaels - Craft Store, they sell Wilton brand, they offer a nice variety of colors too, I also have other brands that I bought online and they work as well.

1st Holy Communion Cake
your first holy communion cake you say just fell
it's a secret we wont ever tell
extra butter was smart to have on hand and stashed
when you have a catastrophe and the cake gets smashed

We decided to go with a small cake, it is a 6 inch vanilla cake with vanilla swiss buttecream. First cake I made unfortunately fell and I wasn't able to repair it so I made another one, was up very late that night, I think it turned out very sweet. I used 32 Piece Floral Collection Flower Making Set- Fondant or Gumpaste
to make the small flowers. All the decorations are made from fondant. I used Marshmallow fondant,( recipe can be found here) and then painted with gold luster dust.

Decoration on the front of the cake is made from royal icing, board is covered with fondant, and message is hand piped with royal icing and painted with gold luster dust

Cookies are Sugar cookies (recipe). For the cross and chalice I made a  cookie template ( How to make a template ). I was pretty happy how these turned out. Gold crosses on the cookies are royal icing transfer that  I made, as well as the small image of a chalice with a tiny cross. All details are painted with gold luster dust.

I added few tiny fondant flowers

Cupcakes are very simple, vanilla cupcake with vanilla swiss buttercream, I also made chocolate with chocolate butercream but I forgot to take a picture.
Decorations - little fondant crosses that I painted with gold luster dust and added a little fondant flower.
