HOW TO DECORATE SIMPLE BUTTERFLY COOKIES WITH ROYAL ICING

I used an easy wet on wet royal icing technique to make these colorful butterfly sugar cookies.

BUTTERFLY COOKIE CUTTERS

Let’s start with butterfly cookies cutters. There are so many different butterfly cutters out there. In today’s tutorial I used 4 different butterfly cutters. (check the tools section where to get the cutters)

SUGAR COOKIE AND ROYAL ICING

I used my basic Vanilla Sugar Cookie Recipe to make the sugar cookies.  And to decorate I used Royal Icing. To color icing I used gel food colors. In this tutorial I used Americolor Electric Food Colors : pink, blue, green.

To decorate I utilized popular wet on wet royal icing technique using 15 second consistency royal icing.  When creating designs with wet on wet royal icing technique it’s important to use fluid icing.

Fluid icing allows you to drag a needle tool/toothpick through layers of different colors of royal icing creating favored :

ROYAL ICING COLORS AND CONSISTENCY :

Black, Pink, White – 15 second consistency (wings)
Black – 20 second to piping consistency (body)

DECORATING STEPS :

Start by outlining the top wing with black icing (15sec). Pipe additional icing along the outer edge (step 1-2).

Right after flood the middle with pink icing (15sec). Use a needle tool to smooth the icing (step 3-4).

Immediately drag tip of the needle tool/toothpick through black royal icing and into the pink. Wipe the tip of the tool into a paper towel every time you run it through the icing (step 1-6).

Repeat on the opposite site.

Now take white royal icing (15sec) and pipe small dots into the wet black icing, at the top corners of on both top wings. Allow icing to crust before decorating the bottom wings (step 1-3).

Outline the bottom with black icing (15sec). Make extra line on the outer edge to make the black section thicker. Fill the middle with pink icing (15sec) and smooth it out gently with a needle tool (step 1-4).

Immediately drag the needle tool through black icing and into the pink. Wiping the tip of the tool into a paper towel after each time you run it through the icing. Pipe white dots into the wet black icing and then repeat on the other side. Let icing dry (step 1-4).

BUTTERFLY BODY AND SANDING SUGAR

To finish this super easy pink butterfly cookie pipe body with black royal icing ( 20 sec to piping consistency). Then dip the cookie into black sanding sugar. Gently shake off or brush off excess sanding sugar and allow icing to dry. Package cookies as desired.
