Friday, April 8, 2011

It's been a while since I had a featured guest on the blog and today I'd like you to meet  an amazing cupcake and cake artist  ShamsD. Shamima is from South Africa, sharing her sugar art with us today, some of you may know her work from flickr or other sources.I've meet Shamima on Flickr, she is such a great inspiration in everything she does. Her cupcake designs are filled with colorful, at times really striking  color combinations, tickling your senses.
Her vision for pretty is blooming every time she makes a cupcake. Her designs are truly masterpieces and she also takes amazing pictures. They are vibrant, crisp and perfect each time.
What impresses me the most are all the elaborate decorations she makes for her delightful creations. They are little works of art.
In the following interview Shamima shares her tips and views on decorating.
Enjoy.

Meet ShamsD

You favorite cupcake design and why?

That is a difficult one to choose.
I have many favorites, but to narrow it down, I would choose a floral deco, I designed myself, which I call the “twirly” flower.

You have a phenomenal color style, when it comes to decorating your cakes, cupcakes and other sweets, they all shine with such beauty and perfect color combination, what is your personal favorite color combination?
I have an inclination towards the hot pinks, yellow, green and orange but definitely won’t wear those colors. I envision my finishing product to be a collaboration of vibrant, striking, eye-catching colors that depicts a sense of summer.

Do you have a favorite food color brand that you use to create such vibrant colors for your decorations?
I use the ateco spectrum colours and also love the concentrate powders available at my local cake deco store

.

You really amaze me when you say.." I made 85 of these toppers"
what would you say was the most elaborate piece of cupcake decoration that you made?

This was I think the most elaborate topper and so time consuming.

I love your photos, and was always wondering, do you have a set up where you take your photos and what camera do you use?

All the photography I do is usually done before I send off orders, so I don’t have much time to prepare a setup.
If I have pretty papers, I use those as backdrops or white chart paper.
I use a Nikon D40.

You have 20 minutes to make cupcake decorations for 12 cupcakes , what would you make?
I would use my easy rose cutter and make my favorite twirly flowers.

I think you’d make a fantastic cookie decorator, have you ever though entering a decorated cookie world?
I find the challenging art of cup cake decorating interesting, I love creating the intricate designs.
I have considered cookie decorating but, for me, there is a distinct difference between the two, the former of which I appreciate more.

Your cupcake toppers, are they mainly from fondant? Do you make your own fondant or do you use a specific brand, if so which brand do you use? Fondant and heat don’t go well together, do you have any tips on how to make sure fondant doesn’t „sweat“ in the heat?

Yes,my cupcake toppers are mainly from fondant.
I do make my own fondant but at times use bakels pettinice.
Since relocating to a new town I ‘ve had endless problems with humidity.
I now mix fondant and gum paste together and that has solved my problem and my toppers dry quicker.I also add flavoring to my paste .

I always adore the way your frosting looks on your cupcakes, your swirls are sheer perfection, it looks so creamy and delicious, what is your favorite frosting?
My absolute fav is mousseline buttercream.
I love the smooth creamy taste and it’s not so sweet. The luscious texture and glossy finish is the perfect touch to the cake.

How did you get into baking and decorating?

I baked a lot as a teenager and more when I married.
I always baked for family weddings and functions.
Some four years ago my sil introduced me to Zahirah Motalas work on flickr and I was simply blown away .I phoned Zahirah and she was kind enough to explain how she made her cupcake toppers and ever since I have been baking and decorating and many thanks to all the ladies on flickr who have been a huge inspiration and always so happy to share.

It is your birthday, what cake, cupcake dessert would you like?
Chocolate mud cake for sure
With loads of chocolate ganache and strawberries.

3 favorite tools to create cupcake fondant toppers?
My exacto knife is a must.
Pasta machine and ball tool.
